I’ll admit it, I’m a people pleaser. I like making people feel good.
While I would 100% agree this has led me to do a lot of things I wouldn’t have otherwise done, I can honestly say without a doubt I am better off because of it. I have found myself learning instruments I wouldn’t have otherwise learnt, winning a bronze medal in lawn bowls of all things, competing in the Tough Mudder challenge and performing on stage in front of hundreds of people.
While these things might all have made other people happy, whether it was my music teacher, director, friend or coach, that’s usually just the initial reason. It’s the spark that kicks off the motor.
Actually you know what? Humour me for a moment and let’s run with that metaphor.
If making other people happy is the spark, then we’ll need fuel and oxygen to get a flame. For me, my fuel is a good challenge. The only way to improve is through stepping outside your comfort zone and pushing oneself. My drive to improve is based on my desire to do the best by people. It is my philosophy that the better I am, the better I am able to improve and help those around me.
The oxygen is a good story. It’s the breath of fresh air to a world that at times can be taken too seriously. I love hearing people’s stories as everyone has one, and they are all uniquely different. This is what grounds me, keeps me humble and provides me with different perspectives to my own. The only thing that I like more than hearing a good story, is being a part of one.
